Fish of the Gobius genus of the Gobiinae (true gobies) subfamily of the Gobiidae family of the Gobiiformes order of the Percomorpha clade of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Red–mouthed goby (Gobius cruentatus) was first described in 1789 by the German doctor, botanist and chemist Johann Friedrich Gmelin (1748-1804).
It inhabits the depth of 1-50 meters. It dwells near a sandy and rocky bottom, beds of underwater vegetation. The maximum recorded length is 18 cm. It feeds on zooplankton.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
