Pompano (Trachinotus ovatus)

Fish of the Trachinotus (pompanos) genus of the subfamily Trachinotdinae of the Carangidae family of the superfamily Percoidea of the Perciformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Pompano (Trachinotus ovatus) was first described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778).

It is a schooling pelagic coastal species. It inhabits the depth of 50-200 meters. Sometimes, it enters the bays, lagoons and estuaries. The maximum recorded length is 70 cm; specimens up to 35 cm long are more common. The maximum weight is 2.8 kilograms. It feeds on small crustaceans, mollusks and fish.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
