Fish of the Trachurus (jack mackerels or saurels) genus of the subfamily Caranginae of the Carangidae family of the superfamily Percoidea of the Perciformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Blue jack mackerel (Trachurus picturatus) was first described in 1835 by the English traveler and zoologist Sarah Bowdich Lee (1791-1856).

It is a pelagic schooling species. It inhabits the depth of 305-370 meters. It prefers to swim over the irregular bottom. The maximum recorded length is 60 cm; specimens about 25 cm long are more common. It feeds on crustaceans and small fishes.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea, which is more often found in the southern part of the Sea.
