Swallowtail seaperch (Anthias anthias)

Fish of the Anthias genus of the Anthiinae subfamily of the Serranidae family of the superfamily Percoidea of the Percoidei suborder of the Perciformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Swallowtail seaperch (Anthias anthias) was first described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778).

It inhabits the depths of up to 300 meters, usually 30-50 meters. It prefers to swim close to a rocky and gravel bottom. It inhabits caves and other shelters. It has nocturnal habits. The maximum recorded length is 27 cm; specimens up to 15 cm long are more common. It feeds on crustaceans and small fish.

It is a permanent rare inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea, which is more often found in its southern part.
