Fangtooth moray (Enchelycore anatina)

Fish of the Enchelycore genus of the Muraeninae subfamily of the Muraenidae (moray eels) family of the Anguilloidei suborder of the Anguilliformes (eels) order of the Elopomorpha superorder.

Fangtooth moray (Enchelycore anatina), sometimes tiger moray, was first described in 1838 by a British priest and naturalist Richard Thomas Lowe (1802-1874).

It inhabits the depths from 3 to 60 meters. It is the demersal predator. It is of nocturnal nature. It spends most of the time in ambush in the bottom caves, depressions and hollows of rocks, between piles of stones. The maximum recorded length is 120 centimeters, weight – 5 kilograms. It feeds on fish, squid, crab, and also carrion.

A rare inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea, previously it was not observed. The first meetings were registered in 2010 near the Croatian island of Sušac.
