Brown comber (Serranus hepatus)

Fish of the Serranus genus of the Serraninae subfamily of the Serranidae family of the superfamily Percoidea of the Percoidei suborder of the Perciformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Brown comber (Serranus hepatus) was first described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778).

It inhabits the depth of 5-100 meters. It prefers to swim close to a sandy, silty bottom amidst stones and thickets of sea grass. The maximum recorded length is 25 cm, specimens up to 15 cm long are more common. It feeds on crustaceans, mollusks and small fish.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
