Fish of the Tripterygion genus of the Tripterygiidae (threefin blenny) family of the Blenniiformes (blenny) order of the Ovalentaria clade of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Red–black triplefin (Tripterygion tripteronotum) was first described in 1810 by the French naturalist Antoine Risso (1777-1845).
It inhabits a depth of 6-12 meters. It dwells near a stony bottom. The maximum recorded length is 6.5 cm. It feeds on small invertebrates. Males are brighter than females.

It is a permanent but infrequent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
