Fish of the Callionymus genus of the Callionymidae (dragonets) family of the suborder Callionymoidei of the Perciformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Spotted dragonet (Callionymus maculatus) was first described in 1810 by the American naturalist, zoologist and botanist Constantine Samuel Rafinesque (1783-1840).
It inhabits the depth of 45-650 meters. The maximum recorded length is 16 cm, specimens up to 13 cm long are more common. It feeds on small benthic invertebrates.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
