Imperial blackfish (Schedophilus ovalis)

Fish of the Schedophilus genus of the Centrolophidae (medusafishes) family of the Stromateoidei suborder of the Scombriformes order of the Percomorpha clade of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Imperial blackfish (Schedophilus ovalis) was first described in 1829 by the French naturalist and zoologist Georges Cuvier (1769-1832).

It inhabits the depth of 70-700 meters, usually 80-240 meters. The maximum recorded length is 100 cm, specimens up to 60 cm long are more common. It feeds on fish, squid, jellyfish.

It has been found in the Adriatic Sea several times.
