Fish of the Arnoglossus (scaldfish) genus of the Bothidae (lefteye flounders) family of the Pleuronectoidei suborder of the Pleuronectiformes (flatfishes) order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Rüppell‘s scaldback (Arnoglossus rueppelii) was first described in 1844 by the Italian naturalist Anastasio Cocco (1799-1854).
It lives at the depth of 85-900 meters. The maximum recorded length is 15 cm. It feeds on small fish and invertebrates.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
