Eckströms topknot (Zeugopterus regius) was first described in 1788 by the French naturalist Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (1752-1804).

It lives at the depth of 10-180 meters. It prefers to swim near a rocky or, rarely, sandy bottom. The maximum recorded length is 20 cm; specimens up to 12 cm long are more common. It feeds on small fish and invertebrates.
