Dusky spinefoot (Siganus luridus)

Fish of the Siganus genus of the Siganidae (rabbitfishes or spinefoots) family of the suborder Acanthuroidei of the Perciformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Dusky spinefoot (Siganus luridus) was first described in 1829 by the German zoologist and botanist Eduard Rüppell (1794-1884).

It inhabits the depth of 2-40 meters. It dwells near a sandy and rocky bottom. The maximum recorded length is 30 cm, specimens up to 20 cm long are more common. It feeds on algae.

It entered the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal. It is a rare inhabitant of the Adriatic, it has recently been more common.

Sharp thin spines in the dorsal fin contain venom, pricks are very painful.
