Royal flagfin (Aulopus filamentosus)

Fish of the Aulopus genus of the Aulopidae (flagfins) family of the Synodontoidei suborder of the Aulopiformes order of the Cyclosquamata superorder.

Royal flagfin (Aulopus filamentosus) was first described in 1792 by the German naturalist Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723-1799).

It is a bottom fish. It inhabits the depths of 50-1,000 meters, usually 100-200 meters. The maximum recorded length is 44 centimeters, specimens up to 30 centimeters long are more common. It feeds on fish and cephalopods.

It is a rare permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea. It is more often found in the southern part of the sea.
