Fish of the Benthosema genus of the Myctophidae (lanternfishes or myctophids) family of the Myctophiformes order of the Scopelomorpha superorder.

Glacier lantern fish (Benthosema glaciale) was first described in 1837 by the Danish zoologist Johannes Theodor Reinhardt (1816-1882).
It occurs at the depth of 0-1407 meters, usually 300-400 meters. The maximum recorded length is 10.3 cm. It feeds on crustaceans.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the southern part of the Adriatic Sea.
