Fish of the Lampanyctus genus of the Myctophidae (lanternfishes or myctophids) family of the Myctophiformes order of the Scopelomorpha superorder.

Jewel lanternfish (Lampanyctus crocodilus) was first described in 1810 by the French naturalist Antoine Risso (1777-1845).
Bathypelagic species. It occurs at the depth of 0-1192 meters. The maximum recorded length is 30 cm. It feeds on zooplankton.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the southern part of the Adriatic Sea.
