Boxlip mullet (Oedalechilus labeo)

Fish of the Oedalechilus genus of the Mugilidae family of the Mugiliformes (Mullets) order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Boxlip mullet (Oedalechilus labeo) was first described in 1829 by the French naturalist and naturalist Jean Léopold Cuvier (1769-1832).

The maximum recorded length is 25 cm. This coastal schooling fish often prefers to swim close to the river mouths, but doesn’t enter the fresh water. It feeds on detritus and algae.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
