Fish of the Syngnathus genus of the Syngnathinae (pipefishes) subfamily of the Syngnathidae family of the Syngnathiformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Pelagic pipefish (Syngnathus phlegon) was first described in 1827 by the French naturalist Antoine Risso (1777-1845).
It can be sometimes found at depths down to 200 meters. The maximum recorded length is 20 cm. It feeds on zooplankton and small invertebrates.

It is a permanent rare inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
