Large–scaled gurnard (Lepidotrigla cavillone) was first described in 1801 by the French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacépède (1756-1825).
It inhabits the depth of 100-190 meters. It prefers to swim close to the sandy and oozy bottom. The maximum recorded length is 20 cm, specimens up to 12 cm long are more common. It feeds on small benthic organisms.
