Fish of the Callanthias genus of the Callanthiidae (splendid perches) family of the superfamily Percoidea of the Perciformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Parrot seaperch (Callanthias ruber) was first described in 1810 by the American naturalist, zoologist and botanist Constantine Samuel Rafinesque (1783-1840).

It inhabits the depth of 50-500 meters. It prefers to swim close to the rocky and oozy bottom, often hides in underwater caves. The maximum recorded length is 60 cm. It is usually about 17 cm long. It feeds on crustaceans and small fish.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
