Fish of the Tripterygion genus of the Tripterygiidae (threefin blenny) family of the Blenniiformes (blenny) order of the Ovalentaria clade of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Tripterygion melanurum was first described in 1850 by the French zoologist Alphone Guichenot (1809-1876).

It inhabits at depths of up to 12 meters. It dwells on poorly lit areas under overhanging cliffs and other shelters. The maximum recorded length is 5.3 cm. It feeds on small invertebrates.

It is a permanent but rare inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
