Fish of the Pomatoschistus genus of the Gobiinae (true gobies) subfamily of the Gobiidae family of the Gobiiformes order of the Percomorpha clade of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Painted goby (Pomatoschistus pictus) was first described in 1810 by the Swedish zoologist August Wilhelm Malm (1821-1882).
It inhabits the depth of 1-55 meters. It occurs near a pebble and sandy bottom. The maximum recorded length is 6 cm. It feeds on small crustaceans.

It is a permanent infrequent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
