Whiskered sole (Monochirus hispidus)

Fish of the Microchirus genus of the Soleoidei subfamily of the Soleidae family of the Pleuronectoidei suborder of the Pleuronectiformes (flatfishes) order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Whiskered sole (Monochirus hispidus) was first described in 1814 by the American naturalist, zoologist, and botanist Constantine Samuel Rafinesque (1783-1840).

It lives at a depth of 10-250 meters. It prefers to swim near the sandy and muddy bottom. The maximum recorded length is 20 cm; specimens up to 12 cm long are more common. It feeds on crustaceans and mollusks.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
