Northern Italian brook trout (Salmo cenerinus)

Fish of the Salmo genus of the Salmoninae subfamily of the Salmonidae family of the Salmoniformes order of the Protacanthopterygii superorder.

Northern Italian brook trout (Salmo cenerinus) was first described in 1847 by the Italian naturalist Giovanni Domenico Nardo (1802 – 1877). It inhabits fast-flowing rivers and oxygenated water. The recorded maximum length is 80 cm. Specimens up to 40 cm long are more common. Juveniles feed on aquatic insects, invertebrates and fishes.

It is found in submontane and mountain rivers of northern Italy and southern Slovenia, as well as in the basin of the Po River (Italy), alpine and subalpine lakes.
