Fish of the Chauliodus (viperfish) genus of the Stomiidae family of the Phosichthyoidei suborder of the Stomiiformes order of the Stenopterygii superorder.

Sloane’s viperfish (Chauliodus sloani) was first described in 1801 by the German naturalists Johann Gottlob Theaenus Schneider (1750-1822) and Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723-1799).
Bathypelagic species. It occurs at the depth of 200-4.700 meters, usually 490-1.000 meters. The maximum recorded length is 35 cm. It feeds on fish and zooplankton.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the southern part of the Adriatic Sea.
