Surmullet (Mullus surmuletus)

Fish of the Mullus genus of the Mullidae (goatfishes) family of the superfamily Percoidea of the Perciformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Surmullet (Mullus surmuletus) was first described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778).

It inhabits the depth of 5-409 meters. It prefers to swim close to the rocky, sandy and oozy bottom. The maximum recorded length is 40 cm, specimens up to 25 cm long are more common. The maximum weight is 1 kilogram. It feeds on benthic invertebrates, mollusks and fish.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
