Fish of the Lampanyctus genus of the Myctophidae (lanternfishes or myctophids) family of the Myctophiformes order of the Scopelomorpha superorder.

Pygmy lanternfish (Lampanyctus pusillus) was first described in 1890 by the British naturalist James Yate Johnson (1820-1900).

Bathypelagic species. It occurs at the depth of 40-850 meters. The maximum recorded length is 4.3 cm. It feeds on zooplankton.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the southern part of the Adriatic Sea.
