Fish of the Zeus genus of the Zeidae family of the Zeiformes order of the Paracanthopterygii superorder.

John Dory (Zeus faber) was first described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778).

It inhabits the depths of 5-400 meters, usually 50-150 meters. It swims near the bottom. It is a single predator. The maximum recorded length is 90 cm; specimens up to 40 cm long are more common. The maximum weight is 8 kilograms. It feeds on small schooling fish, cephalopods and crustaceans.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea.
