Fish of the Epigonus genus of the Epigonidae (deepwater cardinalfishes) family of the superfamily Percoidea of the Perciformes order of the Acanthopterygii superorder.

Pencil cardinal (Epigonus denticulatus) was first described in 1950 by the French ichthyologist René Dieuzeide.
It inhabits the depth of 130-830 meters, more often – 300-600 meters. The maximum recorded length is 20 cm. It feeds on invertebrates and small fish.

It has been found several times in the southern part of the Adriatic Sea.
